ADS TechSmart was developed to provide a better skilled entry-level technician while also addressing continuing education needs of the current labor force within the diesel fuel injection repair industry. A cooperative effort by industry and education resulted in a program that addresses the needs of ADS members. Trying to influence education in the U.S. is not an easy task. First, it's necessary to be recognized as a viable career choice - one that attracts students to the institution providing the training. Next, it takes a great deal of funding and manpower in working with the educational community in meeting your industry's needs. Finally, industry has to remain vigilant to the changes not only within their environment, but also those within education. These issues were considered in the development of TechSmart. The diesel fuel injection repair industry offers a small number of employment opportunities each year making it difficult to design an exclusive curriculum. It however shares similar educational needs as other diesel industry related businesses. TechSmart was developed to work within the confines of the more prominent heavy equipment and agricultural programs in place. Emphasis is placed on basic fuel system knowledge within the school's curriculum. The ADS TechCert Basic Level Test, TechCert TC1, is a requirement for the student to take before graduation. This test, developed by industry, serves as an excellent evaluation method and exposes the students to ADS. Although most graduates will not be employed by a member shop, they will be exposed to ADS and understand the value member shops offer the industry. These graduates will be future customers of ADS shops! The ADS Technical Education Committee reviewed schools throughout the U.S. that offered diesel related programs and selected ten to work in cooperation with the development of the program. All agreed that goals needed to be balanced with the resources available to ADS. The following priorities were established:
